12/8/10: TweeVo 1.2 Released!

TweeVo 1.2 has been released which now works with some modifications Twitter made to OAuth around 11/30. A huge thanks to Chris Miller and for doing the heavy lifting on this one and implementing the fix.  The binary and source code are updated and can be found at the links below.  Let me know if you run into any trouble with this new version.

10/14/10: TweeVo 1.1 Released!

TweeVo 1.1 has been released which now works with Twitter’s mandatory OAuth authentication scheme.  A huge thanks to Chris Miller, Conrad, and Mark Zaugg for testing the changes. The binary and source code are updated and can be found at the links below.  Let me know if you run into any trouble with this new version.

TweeVo, my latest article and application, is now up at Coding4Fun.  If you own a TiVo and have a Twitter account, this is for you.  TweeVo is a simple background application that polls selected TiVo boxes in your home and tweets what they are recording to a specified Twitter account. The tweet includes a link to www.zap2it.com, which gives viewers of your Twitter stream more information on the show, and allows them to set up a recording to their own TiVo.

  • PeekVo – Follow my TiVo on Twitter and see what I’m recording!
  • TweeVoUsers – Follow my TweeVo users list and see what a variety of TweeVo users are recording.  If you’re using TweeVo and want to be added, let me know!
  • Need Help?  Post a message in the support forum!

You will need .NET 3.5 SP1 installed, but the installer should handle that for you if it isn’t found.  As always, any feedback is welcome.

A very special thanks to Bill Pytlovany, Chris Miller and Mark Zaugg for testing out TweeVo during its (far longer than normal) development cycle, and Joey Buczek for creating the icon.

The one modification I'd like to see would be confirmation that the twitter credentials actually work.

When I played with this, my Tivo was not recording anything new for several hours so I couldn't tell if the application was working or not.

@William, it actually already does this.  If you enter invalid credentials, you will be notified when you try to save the settings and you will not be able to continue until you provide working credentials.

I have a MAC version but it is command line and uses various perl modules if you wish to have the code email me at pyrodex AT gmail DOT com

Would be nice to get something like this working with the Australian version of the tivo. Just something that publishes out to twitter what you have recorded, and not linking to it would do. Guess the source could be hacked to make it work (if someone is a coder to make it happen).

Thanks

@James, thanks!  I had PeekVo follow you and put you in the TweeVoUsers list as well.

I really like this program. Smile I do have a question. How do you change the name of the TiVo? I changed it on tivo.com but its not changing the name on the program. Do I need to go into the TiVo and do this?

Keep up the good work!!

@Abbie, Once TweeVo caches it, it won’t change.  I’m working on a “rescan” feature for the next version, but for now you can close TweeVo, delete the <your user dir>\AppData\Local\Brian_Peek\TweeVo.exeXXXXXX directory where XXXXX is a bunch of random data, and restart the app.  You’ll have to reconfigure your Twitter info and whatnot, but it should pick up the new name at this point (assuming your TiVo itself has gotten the name from the website…it sometimes takes a day or three).  You can check the name in the System Information section of the TiVo.

Ah! We had a new modem installed today and the program went crazy so I had to delete it then create a new folder to install it in and now its working again but I will keep the short cut for deleting the data in case I need it. Thanks for getting back to me. Smile

It appears to generate errors on the Australian version of the TiVo, something about a negative value parsed or something. I am guessing something it's expecting on a web page is not as expected. Would love to see this work on the Australian models, if you need me to beta test to see the changes get made. I'd love to help, but not a .NET coder myself.

Thanks

@Michael Fox, contact me directly using the link on the top nav bar and we can try to figure out what's going on.
